It was both an honour and a privilege to have spent what was always quality time with Gavin during our various outings to the Scottish Mountains. His infectious enthusiasm for just about everything and encyclopaedic memory for all forms of comedy and general wit had us rolling around with crippling laughter on too many occasions. A man of principals and compassion, a true gentleman and a scholar, a real pleasure to have known. We'll raise a glass of something you'd approve of in your honour on our next outing. We'll miss you but your memory will not fade.

Gavin was a friend for somewhere between 15 and 20 years. All a bit blurry further back. We had a lot in common: both builders, both celts, both liked a wee dram, both loved the hills, a shared love of music of all stripes and seeing it live especially.....and both have the same name. I'll miss you pal.

If your heart is heavy
because I've gone away,
Dwell not long upon it
for none of us can stay.
Those of you who like me,
I sincerely thank you all
and those of you who loved me,
I thank you most of all.
